Bhutan Reports New Bird Flu Outbreak

BHUTAN - A new outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been reported.

The veterinary authority in Bhutan sent Immediate Notification dated 23 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes one outbreak at Rinchending in Chhukha province in the south of the country, which borders the Indian state of West Bengal. It started on 18 February and involved a flock of around 500 free-range chickens. In total, 14 birds showed symptoms, eight died and the rest of the flock has been culled.

The presence of the H5N1 virus sub-type has been confirmed.
