Weekly US Broiler Hatchery Report

US - The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that, compared to the same week last year, there were two per cent more broiler-type eggs set and one per cent more chicks placed.

Broiler-type eggs set in 19 selected states up two per cent

Commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly programme set 212 million eggs in incubators during the week ending 5 June 2010. This was up two per cent from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 per cent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.

Broiler chicks placed up one per cent

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly programme placed 173 million chicks for meat production during the week ending 5 June 2010. Placements were up one per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from 3 January 2010 to 5 June 2010 were 3.72 billion, up slightly from the same period a year earlier.
