The veterinary authority sent Follow-Up Report No.2 dated 2 January to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes four outbreaks of HPAI. Two involved the finding of dead wild birds in two southern provinces between 22 and 26 December 2010. A total of 79 mallard ducks were affected, 21 of which were found dead.

The other two outbreaks involved poultry farms in two western provinces, both starting on 29 December. At Poongseo-ri in Cheonan city, Chungcheongnam-do (South Chungcheong) province, one duck at a farm was found dead. The rest of the 10,850-bird flock has been destroyed. On the same day, at Muhyeong-ri in Iksan city in Jeollabuk-do (North Jeolla), five chickens in a flock of 18,000 birds were found dead. The rest of that flock has also been destroyed.

According to the report, dead bodies of wild mallard ducks were reported to the local authorities. Test in the NVRQS detected H5N1 HPAI virus antigen from some samples. The area within 10-km radius from the detection spot was put under movement control. Disinfection and clinical surveillance in that area has been intensified.

There were also notifications about suspected HPAI cases from farms. Those were proved as HPAI virus H5N1 subtype in the NVRQS. The poultry in the affected farms were culled. Disinfection and clinical surveillance in the area within 10-km radius from the affected farms were enhanced.

In each outbreak, the presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the virus has been confirmed.
