Beddington, Dawkins to Address WPSA UK Meeting
UK - The WPSA (UK Branch) Annual Meeting will take place on 4 to 5 April 2011 at The Jubilee Campus of Nottingham University. Sir John Beddington, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government, will deliver the Hammond Memorial Lecture, and Professor Marion Dawkins of Oxford University has been invited to give the Gordon Memorial Lecture.The WPSA meeting this year will form part of a new UK wide animal science meeting which includes the Association for Veterinary Teaching and Research Work (AVTRW), British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) and the Animal Science Forum (ASF). To facilitate this larger animal science meeting, the conference will take place at the University of Nottingham Jubilee Campus. This is a central venue in the UK, with good access to the M1 motorway and East Midlands airport.
The WPSA provisional programme starts at 13:00 on the 4 April but is preceded by an ASF-sponsored session starting at 10:30 on the interplay between immunity, endocrinology and nutrition with talks from Professor Mark Cook, Professor Tom Humphrey and Professor Pete Kaiser.
The first day consists of a variety of original communications and short oral/ poster presentations followed by the Hammond Memorial lecture given by Sir John Beddington, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government on 'Food security in the 21st Century'. After a short break, the 2011 Gordon Memorial Lecture will be given by Professor Marion Dawkins of Oxford University.
The annual conference dinner will be held at the National College for Leadership of Schools, an innovative building flanking the main conference facilities on Jubilee Campus. The National College also provides our recommended accommodation for the conference. They offer a combination of 90 well equipped, high specification bedrooms but a range of accommodation to suit all budgets is also available.
The second day will continue with a further session of original communications followed by our industry session with Dr Barry Thorp speaking on 'Challenges to the egg industry from a veterinary view point' and Dr John Sloss, followed by our Joint WPSA/BSAS/ASF session on the 'Gut Microbiome' with Dr Julian Marchesi 'Human metagenomics in the gut', Dr Leluo Guan 'Rumen microbial ecology with a particular interest in feed efficiency in cattle', Dr Imke Mulder 'Non-ruminant nutrition, host microbial interaction in the gut', Dr Arjan Narbad 'Probiotics in the chicken gut and their impact on the diversity of the microbial flora and on the host's immune response'. After lunch, WPSA will have the final set of original communications and close at 16:45.
