H5N1-Positive Poultry Found in Chiba

JAPAN - Two commercial flocks in Chiba city have tested positive to the H5N1 sub-type of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus.

The veterinary authority has sent Follow Up Report No. 11 dated 23 March to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes the finding of HPAI-positive birds at two neighbouring farms in Chiba prefecture – Wakaba-ku 1 and Wakaba-ku 2 on 13 and 16 March, respectively. Two and 82 birds died and were found to have been infected with the virus on farms 1 and 2, respectively. The remaining 96,196 birds on the two farms were destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the virus has been confirmed.
