ABC reports that the South Australian Farmers Federation poultry committee wants free range eggs to be defined as eggs produced on a farm with 1,500 chooks per hectare or less.

But it says farms with between 1,500 and 5,000 chooks per hectare should have to market eggs as medium density free range and producers with between 5,000 and 10,000 chooks per hectare should market their eggs as high density free range.

Chairman John Rohde says the committee will now lobby the South Australian State Government and national lobby group the Egg Corporation to introduce its standards.
