Tamil Nadu Broiler Breeders on Indefinite Strike
INDIA - Members attached to the Tamil Nadu Broiler Growing Farmers Associations and Chicken Farm Associations Federation across the State have announced an indefinite strike from last Friday (16 August), with a ten-point charter of demands including hike in the remuneration for rearing chickens.

According to The New Indian Express, State organiser of the federation and former MLA G Latha said over 50,000 farmers, who are members of the federations, have joined the strike from across the State.
Mr Latha said while the hapless farmers who were unable to get good returns from farming activities had migrated to poultry activities, the broiler companies that supplied the young chicks were paying wages in the range of Rs 2 to Rs 3 per kg, for the past 20 years while the companies were able to sell the full grown chicken meat in the range of Rs140 to Rs 200 per kg.
"This is sheer exploitation," Mr Latha said, adding,
The farmers would neither allow the companies to take the fully-grown chicken nor accept young chicks for rearing, Mr Latha said. Other demand is the payment of annual bonus of Rs 5 per chick by the companies, she added.
