Bar G Ranch Poultry is owned and operated by Darrell and Shannon Glaser.

The farm, which has been in the family for over 100 years, consists of 500 acres, in which turkeys are raised on behalf of Cargill Turkey Production, LLC. Bar G Ranch Poultry has four brooder houses with a total capacity of 60,000 birds per flock. The farm also raises cattle and produces forage.

Bar G Ranch Poultry utilises a nutrient management plan for applying litter to their land with half of the litter used on their own farm and the remainder sold to other farms. The nutrient management plan has addressed phosphorus since 1996. Bar G Ranch Poultry only applies litter to fields that do not exceed established thresholds for soil phosphorus concentration. They also use an incinerator for mortality disposal. Ash generated by the incinerator is used as another organic nutrient source on the farm.

Darrell and Shannon believe that that the careful litter management practices they have in place encourages the growth of beneficial grasses and cover around the farm to help support the native species of birds and animals. Further, Bar G Ranch Poultry recently constructed five new 6,000 cubic yard ponds to increase the collection of surface run-off water that is used to water cattle and support wildlife of all kinds.

Elton Maddox, 2014 USPoultry chairman and president and CEO of Wayne Farms, Oakwood, Georgia, presented the award to the Glaser family.

Applicants were rated in several categories, including dry litter or liquid manure management, nutrient management planning, community involvement, wildlife enhancement techniques, innovative nutrient management techniques, and participation in education or outreach programmes. Applications were reviewed and farm visits conducted by a team of environmental professionals from universities, regulatory agencies and state trade associations in selecting national winners in six regions.
