South Korea Reports 11 H5N8 Bird Flu Outbreaks

SOUTH KOREA - Eleven recent outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in domestic poultry - affecting almost 152,000 birds - have been reported.

The South Korean veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 2 dated 10 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes 11 outbreaks of HPAI starting between 19 January and 6 February across several regions in the west and south-east of the country.

In total, 151,700 birds - ducks and chickens - were affected, of which, 11,080 died and the rest have been destroyed.

The presence of the HPAI virus H5N8 has been confirmed. The source of infection is unknown.
