According to an Immediate Notification dated 4 March from the German veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), low-pathogenic avian influenza has caused clinical disease in a fattening turkey flock.

The outbreak started on the farm at Langen, near Cuxhaven, on 27 February. Of the 23,500 birds there, 2,320 showed sign of disease and 100 died. The remaining turkeys have been destroyed.

No poultry or poultry meat has been moved to other regions in Germany, EU Member States or third countries. All poultry has been destroyed and safely disposed of.

The virus has been identified as a low-pathogenic H7N7 subtype.

The last outbreak of avian flu in Germany was in November 2014.
