RUSSIA - An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in wild birds in Russia.

The outbreak was of the H5N1 serotype.

Two great crested grebes (Podiceps cristatus) and two common terns (Sterna hirundo) were affected, and all four birds died from the disease.

Russia is actively monitoring birds in the surroundings of Ubsu-Nur Lake, where the dead wild birds were found. Testing of other, healthy wild birds has not shown any evidence of the virus.

The virus showed strong similarity with H5N1 isolates collected in Russia over the past year.
