A Dahanu poultry farmer has destroyed USD$780,000 worth of poultry products, which included 175,000 one-day-old birds and 900,000 hatchery eggs, following rumours that drove customers not to purchase poultry due to Covid-19.

The brds and eggs were buried in pits on the producer's farm after false information spread on social media.

The loss has led to work shortages and revnue losses across India, where live birds make up the majority of the market.

State authorities have reiterated that eating poultry products will not result in contracting Covid-19, but producers are facing a crisis due to the spread of misinformation.

Farmers are now asking government compensation to support them through the Covid-19 pandemic.
