Hong Kong halts poultry imports from Arkansas over bird flu
Ban follows H5N1 outbreak report in US state of Arkansas
Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety has suspended imports of poultry meat, products and eggs from Clay County, Arkansas, after the World Organisation for Animal Health reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in the area, according to a government-issued press release.
The suspension took effect immediately and applies to all poultry meat, processed products and eggs from the affected region, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said on April 27.
According to official trade data, Hong Kong imported about 54,830 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and around 4.33 million poultry eggs from the United States last year.
The Centre for Food Safety said it has contacted US authorities regarding the outbreak and will continue to monitor updates from the World Organisation for Animal Health and other relevant agencies. It said further action will be taken depending on how the situation develops.
