Cal-Maine buys Van's Foods in frozen breakfast push
Acquisition to boost prepared foods sales by 10%, volume by 6%
Cal-Maine Foods, the largest egg company in the US, recently acquired certain assets of the Van's Foods business from Sara Lee Frozen Bakery, according to a company-issued press release.
Van's holds the top position in gluten-free waffles and competes in the frozen better-for-you breakfast segment, with a product line including gluten-free, protein-enhanced, and whole-grain waffles and pancakes.
The acquisition is expected to increase Cal-Maine's prepared foods annual sales by about 10% and volume by roughly 6%.
Cal-Maine said the deal supports its strategy to diversify beyond its core egg business and grow its prepared foods retail presence. The company said it plans to expand Van's distribution using its existing logistics network and pursue cross-selling opportunities across grocery, e-commerce, and direct-to-consumer channels.
Sherman Miller, president and chief executive officer of Cal-Maine Foods, said the company sees strong potential in the brand.
"We believe this acquisition will further our diversification strategy by expanding our reach in prepared foods consumer-facing retail," he said. "We see meaningful opportunities to drive growth, unlock efficiencies, and innovate in ways that better serve our customers and consumers."
Van's will continue to operate under its existing brand identity following the acquisition.
