A team deployed by the Area Administration Office, Rajapur, seized 1,000 live chickens in Rajapur bazaar located at Bardiya district, some 390 km south west of capital Kathmandu and destroyed them Wednesday evening fearing outbreak of bird flu.

The import of livestock products, including chickens and eggs, from India has been banned in Nepal following bird flu (avian influenza) outbreak in some Indian cities bordering to Nepal.

It is said that there has been no let-up in import of poultry products from India to Nepal, despite measures to discourage cross-country poultry trade since secret routes have been used to bring in eggs and live birds taking advantage of open border, said the report.

On 16 January, Nepali government for the first time confirmed the outbreak of bird flu virus in Jhapa district (bordering to neighboring country India), some 320 km southeast of Nepali capital Kathmandu and issued a bird flu alert in the area.
