Israel Reports Newcastle Disease Outbreak

ISRAEL - The veterinary authority has reported an outbreak of Newcastle disease.

The Israeli veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 21 January to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes an outbreak of Newcastle disease in a flock of 40,000 birds at in Hadarom in the south of the country, starting on 19 January. Around 4,000 birds were affected and 300 died.

According to the report, there are three poultry houses on the site with 31-day-old broilers. The disease was detected in only one pen. Culling in all the three houses and disinfection are expected to be complete by 25 January. Surveillance will be performed 10 kilometres around the outbreak.

The last outbreak of the disease in Israel was in June 2009.
