In a recently published study, an inactivated adjuvanted bacterin of Borrelia anserina protected the laying hens against experimental challenge of the disease.

Fowl spirochaetosis caused by B. anserina is responsible for severe economic losses in the poultry industry, according to Bilal Aslam and colleagues at the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad in a paper published in Journal of Applied Poultry Research.

Due to resistance, less choice in antibiotics, and the unavailability of any commercial vaccine for fowl spirochaetosis, control of this disease is very difficult. In the present study, B. anserina was isolated from Argas ticks collected from different poultry farms in Pakistan for the preparation of a Montanide-adjuvanted inactivated B. anserina vaccine.

Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses of the vaccine were evaluated in laying hens (n= 75) after injecting the vaccine intramuscularly. An ELISA was performed to check the level of antibodies, whereas a splenic cell migration assay was used to assess the cellular immune response against the vaccines.

Montanide-adjuvanted inactivated bacterin had a significantly higher level (P<0.05) of protective antibodies as compared with inactivated bacterin without adjuvant. No significant difference (P>0.05) was observed in the case of adaptive response in all the groups in the experiment.
